This volume contains all of Mozart's music for horn and orchestra. Four of the five works - perhaps all five - were written for Ignaz Joseph Leutgeb or Leitgeb, who played the horn in the Archbishop's orchestra at Salzburg, then moved to Vienna. There in 1777 he opened a cheese shop, described by Mozart's father as "the size of a snail's shell" but continued to play the horn. That he possessed great skill as a performer is evident from the music Mozart wrote for him, and Dittersdorf lists Leutgeb among the "rare virtuosos" he heard in Vienna. Otherwise Leutgab does not seem to have been very bright; Mozart delighted in poking fun at him.
