Niniejsza publikacja to czwarty zeszyt zbioru "Pieśni" na głos solowy i fortepian Franza Schuberta. Odnaleźć w niej można wybrane kompozycje wokalne pochodzące z opusów od 81 do 108. Dzieła te skomponowane zostały m. in. do słów Pietro Metastasio, Wolfganga Goethego oraz Ernsta Schultze. Pośród kompozycji na głos solowy i fortepian znajdują się również dwie pieśni o innej obsadzie: "Zur guten Nacht" op. 81 nr 3 na głos solowy, fortepian i chór (dwa tenory i dwa basy) oraz pieśń "Widerspruch" op. 105 nr 1 na chór i fortepian (dwa tenory, dwa basy). Schubert to jeden z najsłynniejszych twórców pieśni w romantyzmie. Stworzył on ponad sześćset dzieł wokalnych i wokalno - instrumentalnych (w tym przede wszystkim utwory na głos solowy z fortepianem). Główną jego inspiracją była poezja. Formę swoich pieśni uzależniał od budowy wybranego tekstu. Często stosował przy tym formę pieśni zwrotkowej lub przekomponowanej. Schubert jako jeden z pierwszych kompozytorów w romantyzmie zaczął nadawać ogromne znaczenie partii fortepianu.
This edition of Schubert's lieder (volumes 2 to 4) contains all those lieder which were published with opus numbers during his lifetime. The combination of lieder into a group with a single opus number was made by Schubert himself; the opus number has no chronological signifiance for the lieder. Schuber was very careful in selecting thew lieder which he wished to publish, and took similar pains when combining them into groups. Many of the lieder in these groups are related not only by content but also musically; for example there is at times a meanful succession between the keys, though this of course is only apparent in the original edition, usually for high voice.
